In Jordan Harrison’s Act a Lady, when a group of everyday prohibition-era men from a small midwestern town take on female parts from an 18th-century French melodrama for a benefit performance, they quickly learn that masculinity can be just as restricting as a Victorian-era corset. The recipient of several prestigious fellowships and a former staff writer for Orange is the New Black, Harrison conjoins a gift for rapid-fire dialogue with moments of delicate introspection, asking us all to consider what makes a man a man, and what makes a woman a woman.
