With its origins in African American fraternities and sororities, stepping is known for its intricate, synchronized patterns of stomps, kicks, claps, and call-and-response. As the world’s first professional company dedicated to this art form, the dancers of Step Afrika! use their bodies as instruments, integrating stepping with African traditional dance and other dance forms to create a high-energy, sharply choreographed, and incredibly entertaining performance.

Having been one of the highlights of Brooklyn Center’s 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, the company returns to the borough with a program that combines fresh, new works with favorites from its extensive repertoire. The 2018 Brooklyn residency will include an excerpt fromThe Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence, the company’s new dance-theater work inspired by the visual artist’s groundbreaking “The Migration Series.” Charting the story of African-American migrants moving from the South to the North in the early 20thCentury,The Migrationenjoyed a successful Off-Broadway run at the New Victory Theater in November 2017, subsequently touring across the United States.

NOTE: Audience members are invited to join us before the 8pm performance for a 7pm discussion/Q&A with Step Afrika's Founder, C. Brian Williams, in the Kumble Theater lobby.

Running Time: Approximately 90 minutes, no intermission

Tickets: $35
